GUY ROSE. American painter.

Biography:
Guy Rose was an American Impressionist painter (1867 - 1925), who is recognized as one of California's top impressionist painters of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Guy Orlando Rose was born March 3, 1867 in San Gabriel, California. He was the seventh child of Leonard John Rose and Amanda Jones Rose. His father was a prominent California senator. He and his wife raised their large family on an expansive Southern California ranch and vineyard - the San Gabriel Valley town of Rosemead bears the family name. In 1876 young Guy Rose was accidentally shot in the face during a hunting trip with his brothers. While recuperating he began to sketch and use watercolors and oil paints. He graduated from Los Angeles High School in 1884 and moved to San Francisco where he did his art training at the California School of Design, where he studied with the Danish-born artist Emil Carlsen. On September 12, 1888, Rose enrolled at the Académie Julian in Paris and studied with Benjamin-Constant, Jules Lefebvre, Lucien Doucet and Jean-Paul Laurens while in Paris. In 1888-89, he won a scholarship at the Academie Delacluse. He met fellow students Frank Vincent and Frederick Melville at the Académie Julian - Frank Vincent and Guy Rose were to remain lifelong friends. Rose lived New York, New York in the 1890s and illustrated for Harper's, Scribners, and Century. Choosing to return to France in 1899, he and his wife Ethel Rose bought a cottage at Giverny. In 1900 he resided in Paris and spent the winter in Briska, Algeria where he painted three known paintings. From 1904 to 1912 husband and wife lived in Giverny and his works from this period show the influence of "the master" Claude Monet, who became his friend and mentor.

DELPHIN ENJOLRAS. French painter.

Biography:
Delphin Enjolras, 1857 - 1945, was a French academic painter. Enjolras painted portraits, nudes, interiors, and used mostly watercolours, oil and pastels. He is best known for his intimate portraits of young women performing mundane activities such as reading or sewing, often by illuminated by lamplight. Perhaps his most famous work is the "Young Woman Reading by a Window" (pictured right). He was born in Courcouron, Ardèche. Enjolras studied under watercolorist Gaston Gerard at the "Ecole de Dessin de la Ville de Paris", as well as Jean-Léon Gérôme at the Beaux-Arts, and Pascal Dagnan-Bouveret.From 1890 and onwards, Enjolras exhibited his works at the Paris Salon, joining the Société des Artistes Français in 1901. Also, the Musée du Puy and Musée d'Avignon both have collections of his works. Enjolras painted mainly landscapes in his early career; later it became evident that his love was for painting women. He changed genres, focusing mainly on the portraiture of elegant young women by either lamplight or black lighting. He would become an excellent painter of nudes, and many of his later works, such as "La Sieste" (pictured right) are of an erotic and sensual nature.

TONJA SELL.

Biography:
I was born in rural northern Wisconsin, studied at the Milwaukee Institute of Art & Design - MIAD and received the Regent Scholarship at Arizona State University, Phoenix, AZ.
My repertoire includes drawing, painting, ceramic and metal sculpture, glass-blowing and fusing
textiles and more.
The Pre-Raphaelites, Impressionists, Expressionists as well as my very creative and supportive
parents are among those who have influenced my work.
'I was creating something all of the time as a child, my parents gave me opportunity to explore.
That is something I am very grateful for.
I live with my husband Matthew, also a MIAD graduate in the field of Industrial Design,
and our four children in the home/studio that we designed and built together.
While my work incorporates a wide range of media and subject including landscapes and
natural themes, the female form is a reoccurring focus. Often depicted in a narrative setting.
'I appreciate work that draws me into someone's experience. A point in time, a moment, that I can become a part of. The human element is important to me. There is inspiration everywhere: a glance observed, patterns of light and shadow created on drapery, texture of leaves on the damp forest floor. An artist is a reporter of sorts, capturing something of personal import and conveying it through unique interpretation to their 'readers.' I love that process. Working it out and making it my own.'
Though I have been working artistically over the years, I still consider myself an emerging artist. The home-education of our children has been my primary focus. Now that they are becoming more independent I am able to devote a larger portion of my time to my art.
